The Phone Still Exists! Pick Up the Phone!
When you are asked to update sensitive information like banking details, pick up the phone and confirm their identity!
Tip #1
If you receive an email requesting sensitive information from an employee, client, or supplier, always call to verify their identity before providing any details. Use a phone number you already have on file, not the one provided in the email.
Tip #2
You're only as secure as your weakest link. For many, that’s the reading pane in their email. Phishing attacks often occur through emails, so disable the reading pane in your email browser.
We frequently hear about corporate breaches in the news, which can encourage criminals to explore cybercrime, such as phishing scams. For example, a Montreal company behind the Just for Laughs comedy festival lost over $800,000 last year in an impersonation scam via email manipulation, according to La Presse.
Did You Know?
Never update contact information without verbally confirming the change. Treat every email—even from trusted sources—as a potential phishing scam. Always verify details outside the email, as even a minor change (like a digit in a phone number) can lead to costly mistakes. Stay alert and cyber safe!
